Studio stack: Dorytomus II
Dorytomus sp. I'm leaning towards D. tremulae
Size: 5 mm
Another view of the charming weevil from the last post!
Like many weevils, Dorytomus-species can fold their first (elongated) antennae-segments into slots at either side of the snout. If you look carefully at the high resolution version you might be able to tell that the antenna socket is located half way down the snout.
Stacked from 136 exposures in Zerene Stacker.

Posted on: April 12, 2012
Wow, Pinocchio should be really jealous! This must have been a lot of work!? However, it was worth it. Amazing preparation, clarity and sharpness. I like the angle in the second last image most (and the slots are well visible). The yellow toned background works good.

They are all very Wow John but i love the one under the stereogram, just a perfect head shot with fantastic colour, the details in the large images are too good! you have me saving for a Mitutoyo apo now.

Yes. These are far spectacular, than the lateral view in the first post. Stereos make complete the experience. Just found a llittle transparency in the second stereo, on the middle of the snout (however I know the amount of work these kind of stacks need).

Wouldn't normally use the word cute when talking about a weevil but in this case I think you can make an exception. Great shot.

Superb weevil! Instant fav. It reminds me of the Stephen King story "The Mist," as this strange creature emerges from a fog of bokeh and light.
